Post War Career

He served with the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment and landed in Normandy on "D" Day.He served in "C" Company under Major C. A. Boycott (who was subsequently wounded) with with Captain J. S. Coppock. The two other troop officers in the Company, Lts E. A. Tribe and M. L. Wilson were killed.The Company embarked on L. S. I. "Empire Broadsword" in the Solent. After transferring to a Landing Craft, The Company landed on "Queen " beach and established the bridgehead. the Company then set out to capture Chateau de la Londe. There was strong cross fire from machine guns and. on the right flank Lt. Woodward with the platoon on the left had only 7 men left with him. He was subsequently awarded the military Cross. He was wounded on 27/04/45 under casualty list No 1742 but he remained at duty.
