Qualified as Chartered Surveyor in 1949 and as a Member of the Institute of Public Health Engineers in 1952. After service with the East Suffolk County Council, he joined the Estates Department of the legal and General Assurance Society until his retirement in 1983. He was Chairmanof the City of London Branch of the R.I.C.S. He was admitted to the Livery of the Worship Company of Chartered Surveyors on its creation in 1977. He was appointed an external examiner to the South Bank Polytechnic in 1979.
