Served with 7th Battalion RAC in North Africa and Italy where he was awarded a Military Cross and subsequently wounded on 3rd May 1944.

post hostilities, he changed his named by Deed Poll to "Betts". Passed the Final Diploma Examinations in Gemmology and became a Fellow of the gemmologists Association in 1973. In 1979 he was reported as being in charge of the jewellery side of Phillips of London
