Post War Career

He was commissioned into RAF in 1943 and served in the RAF Airfield Condtruction Unit. He was posted to Normandy in August 1944 and subsequently to Belgium, Germany and Singapore., gaining extensive experience in the reconstruction of war damaged airfields. He left the RAF in 1947.

Before his war service, he had joined the Suffolk County Council to construct roads to new Airfields. After the War, apart from a short spell with a firm of Consultants, his career was spent with County Council Highways departments. He worked for Surrey, the West Riding, Somerset and East Sussex, ending up as County Surveyor of Kent from 1972 - 84. He was President of the County Surveyors Society in 1978 - 79. He was awarded the OBE for services to Local Government in 1984.
