he started up his own business at St. Augustines Garage on Felixstowe Road. He was past Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and of the Ipswich Section of the Motor Traders Association.He was also Area President of the United Kingdom Commercial Travellers'Association. /he was a emeber of the Rotary Club and of the Ipswich Inner Crime Panel. He was a Freemason and Worshipful Master of his Lodge as well as eing President of the O.I. Club in 1971.

his great passion was Ipswich Town Football Club and he was a Director from 1964 to 1995. He was made a Vice President for life. The Ipswich Town Chairman at the time of his death was David Sheepshanks who said of him:-" A man of great integrity and honour, Harold was an avid supporter of this Club since the 1920s and rarely ever missed a match, attending reserve and youth games until his death" He was the Suffolk Representative on the Football Association Main Council at Lancaster Gate and attended, with his wife Edna, one of the royal Garden Parties in that capacity.
