He served on HMS Indomitable which was a modified Illustrious Class Aircraft Carrier launched in 1940 and christened by Clementine Churchill. The ship, with a crew of 1600, was sent to the West Indies and joined the Eastern Fleet in January 1942 based at Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). After the fall of Singapore, she took part in Operation Ironclad, the successful invasion of French Madagascar. She then returned to the U. K. and was back in action in Operation Pedestal as part of the convoy to supply Malta. She suffered damage and was sent to U> S. A. for repairs. Further repairs were required after she was torpedoed whilst supporting the invasion of Sicily. She finally returned to the Eastern Fleet in early 1944 and supported the liberation of Hong Kong. Her battle Honours were :- Malta Convoys (1942), Diego Suarez (1942), Sicily (1943), Palembang (1945) and Okinawa (1945). She was broken up in 1955.
He remained in the Navy and rose to Lieutenant Commander (Engineer (M)). He then joined BP and retired to Winsley near Bath in 1983.
