Post War Career

He served with the 6th (Cyclist) Bn. Suffolk Regiment at the start of WW1 but transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and saw service at the 3rd Battle of Ypres where he was badly gassed and repatriated. After the War he transferred to 4th Bn. Suffolk Regiment.During the years 1926 - 39 he and Colonels Clarke and Hooper, in spite of many frustrations, carried out their duties as successive Commanding Officers in an exemplary fashion so that, at the beginning of hostilities, the Battalion was efficient and virtually up to strength. He commanded the Bn. from 1938 but was prevented by his disabilities from travelling overseas at the start of WW11. He was succeeded in June 1940 by Lt. Colonel A. A. Johnson (also an O.I.) and then went on to organise and command the 70th (Young Soldiers) Battalion. He was not prepared to return to civilian life whilst the war continued and obtained a staff appointment with the local Home Guard for the duration of the war.

Managing Director of Rands and Jeckell. Governor of Ipswich School for 20 years.
