He served in the Administrative and Special duties Branch of the Royal Air Force.

He was employed by Lloyds Bank Cornhill ipswich Branch until his retirement in 1965. He had a lifelong interest and enthusiasm for scouting and wrote about Ipswich Scouting news in the Evening Stat under the name "Hiawatha". He was also involved in in the development of "Esparanto" which was an attempt to to start an international language. He was, for ten years, the British Secretary of the International Christian Esparanto League.
