Passed 1st into Sandhurst and in 1939 he began service with the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment. He was wounded on 13th June 1944 in France, having taken part in the D - Day landings.

He continued to serve in the Army and became a Brigade Major in the Territorial Army. he served with the Suffolk Regiment in Europe, the Middle East and Malaya, where he was mentioned in despatches. He attended Staff College and worked in the War Office for 5 years before his last appointment at S.H.A.P.E. in Paris. His last promotion was to Lt. Colonel. He then joined the Ministry of the Environment and travelled extensively throughout Europe, retiring in 1982. He was a part time Adviser to the House of European Legislation committee on E.E.C. Environmental Legislation.
