Post War Career

His interest in sailing led to him joining the Royal Navy Voluntary Supplementary Reserve and he joined up at the outbreak of war. He served mostly in Submarine Depot ships as far apart as West Africa and Newfoundland. He ended the War as Secretary to the Senior Officer Harwich.

He, with a friend, founded a a Deben based yacht charter and brokerage company from the Stables of the Old Maltings in Waldringfield. This later blossomed into the East Coast Yacht Agency at Woodbridge. For three decades,he wrote a column of Suffolk and North Essex notes in the Yachting Monthly. He retired to his farm in 1966, still retaining his interest in nautical affairs which included the preservation of Thames barges.
