His DSO and one of the Mentions in Despatches were in recognition of services in the Middle East between July and October 1941 and the other Mention in Despatches was for services in 1943 in Persia and Iraq. He was also twice wounded. When in 1941, he was appointed to command the Skinner's Horse, he was the youngest Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. From 1944, he was in Burma and he retired in 1947 as a Brigadier in the South Burma Area Command.

After retirement, he returned to Scotland and in 1948 he acted as Appeals Organiser to the Central council for Physical Recreation and in 1950 he was appointed Organiser to the South Edinburgh Unionist Association. He retained his life long interest in the School and unveiled the World War 11 memorial in the Chapel on July 3rd 1948 (see introductory photograph if him inspecting the Guard of Honour).
