Served in General Duties Branch, having been trained in the USA.
In 1966 was appointed head of the British Consular Mission in Salisbury Northern Rhodesia and mentioned regularly in the national press in connection with talks between the British Government and the Smith regime. He subsequently served as Head of Chancery in the British High Commission in India and was Acting British High Commissioner in Uganda at the time of the expulsion of Asians from the country by Idi Amin. He then became the British High Commissioner in Jamaica and finally Singapore.
