Post War Career

Joined the Territorial Army in 1938 as a gunner in the 58th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery and was mobilised in 1939. He was commissioned and posted to the Hertfordshire Yeomanry R.A., part of the 18th Division. In October 1941, he was sent to Singapore and captured on 15th February 1942 and was a prisoner of war At Changi (Malal 1 Camp) and subsequently at camps in Thailand. He spent three years on the building of the Burma-Thailand Railway. His regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toomey, was at Tha Maa Kham (known as Tamarkan) in Thailand from where the wooden and steel bridges over the River Kwai were constructed by POW's.

He took over the family Jewellery business in 1951 on the death of his father. He joined the re-formed Territorial Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry R. A. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration for his distinguished service.

He played golf for Suffolk County and was Suffolk's representative on the English Golf Union. HE was also Captain and past President of Ipswich Golf Club as well as past President of Suffolk Golf Union.

He was President of the O.I. Club in 1983..
