Post War Career

He was initially posted to the Rifle Brigade and commissioned in the Suffolk Regiment. He then volunteered for airborne forces and joined the Army Air Corps. After further training he joined the 8th (Midlands) Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. The Battalion was dropped on "D" day over drop zone "K" between Cuverville and Touffreville and was involved in the liberation of France. It then took part in Operation Varsity which was the largest single lift airborne operation of WW2 and comprised 16.000 airborne troops and several thousand aircraft. Its aim was to assist in the crossing of the Rhine as allied troops were already approaching one bank. The airborne troops were dropped behind enemy lines.The Battalion crossed the Rhine and there was heavy hand to hand combat at Lembeck Castle which was well defended. Allan Freane was killed during this engagement.

He is named in Casualty list no.1725 with the incident date being the 7th April 1945.
He is buried at Reichswald War Cemetary Grave No 33.D.4.
