Served in Europe and was mentioned in despatches "for gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe (including D-Day)."

He was Governor of the School form 1953 (34 years) and had a great interest in local politics. He held the seat for the Conservatives uninterrupted for 38 years. He was Chairman of the Estate Committee in 1960 and a member of the East Anglian Economic Planning Council. A member of the Suffolk County Council, he was Chairman of the Ipswich Education Committee from 1966 to 1974. He was Mayor of Ipswich in 1976.
