Sidney Brett joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and fought throughout WW1 in France. He was 3 times buried,gassed, seriously wounded twice, a victim of trench fever and shell shocked. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 for "Bravery in the Field" and demobilised in 1919 with the rank of sergeant. He then attended Birmingham University and became a teacher between the wars.
