He was a Queen's Scholar and Head Boy in 1901. He was Captain of Fives for 4 years,Cricket for 2 years and Vice-Captain of Football for 2 years. He is one of a select band who made over 1000 runs and took over 150 wickets in their years in the X1. He won the Throwing the Cricket Ball for 5 years in succession and his record of 110yds 2ft. 6ins. still stood in 1954.He won an Open Classical Scholarship to Selwyn College Cambridge. He was President of the O.I. Club in 1947.

He served in WW1 with the London and Middlesex Regiments in command of a Battalion in Malta, the Sudan, Gallipoli and France.He was wounded, mentioned in despatches twice and was appointed C.M.G. in 1918. In WW2, he was appointed Director of Army Education.

He was on the Staff of the Ministry of Education.
